Alex Young Hwa Cho
VIVO Intern and SLAB Collaborator
Young-Hwa (Alex) is an independent filmmaker, originally from South Korea, finishing her fall internship at VIVO. Arriving in Canada in 2006 to work on her Masters at Emily Carr Institute Art + Design, she has embraced the joyful influence from ‘the Euro-American experimental spirits’ and is establishing herself as an interactive media artist. Her recent projects concern Korean shamanism; “Musok” following up her grandma’s spiritual life as a Korean shaman. She is researching dynamic interactivities and healing networks among different beings’ bodies, memories, identities, philosophies, and belief systems and incarnating them through her practices of electronic sound, Korean folk music, interactive installation, perform/ing + /ance, and experimental film and videomaking. SLAB is one of the greatest platforms her practice has been enthusiastically connected to.
