SLAB 5 Experimental Theremin Orchestra | 2011 | 20min | A/V Performance | Canada

SLAB 5 presents the Experimental Theremin Orchestra, a symphony of sounds and visual noise performed by 15 artists on instruments they built themselves. Blurring the lines between experimentation, creation and public presentation, the event will be a risk-sharing experience for both the performers and the audience.

Invented in the 1920s, the Theremin is one of the earliest electronic music instruments. Played only through gestures without actually being touched, the Theremin remains profoundly unique in its inimitably eerie sound and its uncanny physical presence

Artists: Rob Symmers, David Leith, Kate Rissiek. Ban Wei, Phoebe Heintzman Hope, Leslie Kennah, Jennifer Roworth, Ricarda McDonald, Oliver Nickels, Wynne Palmer, Ryan Amadore, Julie Andreyev + Tom, Simon Overstall, Joel Tong and Brook Lotzkar.

SLAB is VIVO’s Studio Lab for media artists, technology enthusiasts and people who like to tinker. SLAB fosters experimentation unconstrained by conventions of medium, genre or the assumed ways of using technology. SLAB operates to formally, deliberately and methodically break down current patterns of media art production, and re-imagine it through sublime acts of industrial salvage and domestic science. SLAB offers workshops facilitating collaborative projects, providing artists with peer support, mentorship and technical assistance.

SLAB 5 Theremin is a project led by VIVO Artists in Residence: Rob Symmers, David Leith and Kate Rissiek. SLAB is coordinated by Dinka Pignon.
